What’s new this month in the world of health and wellbeing

Sniffing out cancer
They’re often seen as our best friend but now dogs could help us in the fight against cancer. Their unique sense of smell could be used to help us diagnose the disease. Scientists in Massachusetts have worked with dogs to create an electronic version of a Labrador’s nose to help identify cancers such as bowel and prostate in samples of urine. The ‘e-nose’ is being trialled at Milton Keynes University Hospital, and if successful could be seen in hospitals within two years and eventually transformed into a smartphone app, which you can use at home.
Trouble sleeping?
Try the ancient art of tai chi. The martial art could help you sleep, says a new study from China. Researchers from the University of Hong Kong found it was as effective as CBT – the gold standard treatment for insomnia.
Stressbuster
Try this acupressure point for bright eyes
‘With clean fingers and eyes closed, gently massage the inner corner of the eye in clockwise circles to ease strain and refresh your perspective,’ says acupuncturist Johnny Childs*. ‘Its essence is clarity and renewed vision.’
